Job Description
Job Title: Conference Commissioner
About the Gulf South Conference:
The Gulf South Conference is a charter member of NCAA Division II based in Birmingham, Ala. Since 1970, the GSC has established a tradition of excellence and leadership in the Division II landscape, celebrating over 50 national titles and more than 160 region championships. The GSC is comprised of 11 member institutions—The University of Alabama in Huntsville, Auburn University at Montgomery, Christian Brothers University, Delta State University, Lee University, Mississippi College, University of Montevallo, Trevecca Nazarene University, Union University (Tenn.), Valdosta State University, and University of West Alabama. Spring Hill College will join the GSC beginning in the 2027-28 athletic year. The GSC annually sponsors 19 sports and hosts 18 championship events.
Key Roles & Responsibilities:
The following responsibilities relate to the position of Commissioner and should not be assigned to other conference office staff. The Commissioner should:
• Supervise Conference Operations
Manage Conference staff, budgets, contracts, and administrative functions to maintain effective day-to-day operations.
• Facilitate Communication Within Conference
Coordinate communications with all levels of the conference, including but not limited to, Board of Directors, Athletic Administrators, Coaches, and External Constituents
• Oversee Conference Governance
Organize meetings of all committees and ensure implementation and interpretation of conference policies.
• Maintain Strategic Partnerships
Manage relationships with corporate partners, vendors, and media rights holders.
• Lead Conference Officiating Programs
Collaborate with conference officiating coordinators to ensure training, assignment, evaluation, and payment of game officials for all conference sports.
• Represent Conference Nationally
Participate in NCAA and Division II Conference Commissioners Association meetings.
• Manage Conference Championships and Sport Administration
Coordinate planning and execution of conference championships, schedules, and sport oversight.
• Steward Conference Membership Plan
Execute Board approved retention policies with current members, engage potential members, and incorporate new members into the conference.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required and a working knowledge of NCAA Division II
• Minimum of seven years of senior administrative experience in intercollegiate athletics
• Strong interpersonal and decision-making skills, an ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with internal and external constituents within the GSC, other member conferences, the NCAA national office and beyond.
• Strong background in fiscal management and contract negotiations
• Human resource and television production experience
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced degree in athletics administration or related field (Master’s, Doctorate or Juris Doctorate)
• Experience as a Director of Athletics within institution or Commissioner or Associate Commissioner within a Conference.
