Saint Anselm College Reclassification Supported with Collegiate Consulting Divisional Study

As a component of Saint Anselm’s announcement to reclassify to Division III and the NEWMAC, Collegiate Consulting completed a hockey feasibility study considering classification options and opportunities for its men’s ice hockey program.

Deliverables of the study included conference membership options; overall hockey landscape; operating budget and scholarship benchmarking; facility assessment; competitiveness and external revenue potential. In addition, Collegiate Consulting provided rules, requirements, and protocol for reclassification.

Collegiate Consulting provided a SWOT Analysis of all options for its hockey program, as well as financial projections. The final 110-page report was delivered to Saint Anselm in September 2025 for their review and consideration. This is the second project Collegiate Consulting completed for Saint Anselm: In 2016, Collegiate Consulting completed a comprehensive divisional feasibility study and assessment for the entire intercollegiate athletic program.

Quick Bytes

What's the Word?

Per a Sportico.com article published in January 2024, “recent research finds that
in NCAA Division I athletic departments have an average turnover rate of 48%.
Some D-I regions (i.e. Western Carolina) see a turnover rate as high as 72.5%.
The worst turnover rate belongs to Division II athletic departments, which report
an average of over 58% and an average growth rate of -10%.”

Replacing departed athletic directors and coaches can be a daunting task,
often resulting in operational strain. Lack of experience due to high turnover
leads to project delays, reduced donor engagement and inefficiencies in the
athletic department.
