Sam Houston State University and Jacksonville State University submitted applications to join the Football Bowl Subdivision and Conference USA beginning in the 2023-24 season. Collegiate Consulting assisted both institutions with submission of their FBS Membership Application and development of FBS-centric Intercollegiate Athletic Strategic Plan.
Collegiate Consulting has a long history working with both institutions. In 2011, Collegiate Consulting completed a comprehensive FBS Feasibility Study for SHSU. That study was followed by two Benchmarking Assessments in 2015 and 2019. For the most recent project, Collegiate Consulting started working with SHSU in March 2022, concluding with the application and strategic plan submission in June.
Collegiate Consulting completed its first project for Jacksonville State in 2008 completing a FBS Feasibility Study for the Gamecocks. In 2010, Collegiate Consulting returned to conduct a six-month Ticketing & Marketing Assessment and development of External Strategic Plan. Identical to the SHSU timeline, Collegiate Consulting began working with JSU in March 2022 to assist with their respective FBS application and strategic plan.
While back-to-school was once synonymous with changing leaves and aggregating fans excited to cheer-on fall sports, this season had the nation seeing heat waves on the West Coast and flooding/faltering infrastructure on the East Coast.
For example, football games at Sacramento State were delayed to avoid the hottest hours of the day, while Deion Sanders led his team out of town to escape the Mississippi floods.
The illustrated effects of climate change raises salient questions concerning practice and playing time, athletes’ safety and mandated protocols put into place, as conferences expect to expand into broader geographic footprints.
This is where climate change and college athletics meet within the context of humanity: Hopefully, there is an intersection that can exist to consider the two equally.
