What's the Word

This year, fall student-athletes may find something hotter than the competition on the field: The actual temperature.

A newly released report by the Copernicus Climate Change Service verified that last month was the planet’s warmest August since the mid-20th century. With potential to affect cross-country, field hockey, football and soccer, coaches and staff are finding new obstacles in assuring athletes’ physical health and safe performances.

Even with the NCAA’s recommendations on hydration, college athletics have seen heat-related trauma (such as overheating, heat stroke, dehydration or even death) rise with the recent temperatures. According to the American Council on Science and Health, there have been 30 heat-related college football player deaths from 2000 to 2018.

Athletic departments have demonstrated both innovation and extreme caution in balancing health and preseason workouts, with more frequent and extended breaks, mandatory hydration schedules and venue changes for shade and turf temperature. If injury prevention relies on strength training and conditioning, heat injury prevention relies on safety and awareness.

Athletic Departments Look to Streamline for Success

Summer is a time for athletic departments to reflect on performances both on the field and off, while fall draws operational processes into focus.
