SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey (November 6, 2018) – In May the Supreme Court struck down the Professional & Amateur Sports Protection Act, which was a federal law that banned states from allowing gambling on the outcome of sporting events, with the exception of Nevada, which was “grandfathered.” This ruling opened the doors for states to allow gaming.
Sports gambling is a strict NCAA violation. Thus to assist schools, with the new frontier, as gaming increases exponentially, Collegiate Consulting launched its gaming services program. Seton Hall was the first school to retain Collegiate Consulting, bringing the consulting firm to campus in October.
The program included an update since the Supreme Court decision; gaming/gambling education; a presentation by former UNLV AD Jim Livengood to the Seton Hall men’s basketball team and coaching staff. As well as the athletic department senior leadership team and the entire department and student-athletes. The program provided best practices, recommended gaming protocols and procedures, FAQ and question & answer session with Mr. Livengood.
“We are very appreciative of the expertise provided by Mr. Livengood and Collegiate Consulting in their presentation to our staff and student-athletes to discuss the importance of the Supreme Court decision and how it impacts our institution and our athletic program. Their program and presentation provided invaluable information and best practices and helped raise awareness about how the gaming industry can impact our student-athletes, coaches and staff,” stated Seton Hall Vice President & Director of Athletics & Recreational Services Patrick Lyons.
Since May, seven states have either launched or announced plans to launch gaming with 16 more states introducing gaming legislation, and the need for such services, which were limited to the University of Nevada and the University of Nevada – Las Vegas have increase exponentially.
